Letter From The Secretary General
Dear Delegates, Advisors, and DeMUN Staff,
Welcome to DeMUN II at DePaul University.
Model United Nations has played a defining role in my own leadership journey. It has taught me that real leadership is not about speaking the loudest in the room, but about listening carefully, building consensus, and having the courage to engage with difficult ideas. The skills I developed through Model UN, including critical thinking, diplomacy, resilience, and public speaking, continue to shape how I approach my work, my studies, and my commitment to civic engagement.
I believe deeply that what you are doing here at this conference matters for your future. The ability to negotiate across differences, to analyze global challenges thoughtfully, and to advocate for solutions with confidence are skills that will serve you in any path you choose — whether in law, public service, business, medicine, or beyond. Model UN teaches you how to think under pressure, collaborate with people you have just met, and transform disagreement into productive dialogue. That is leadership.
At DeMUN, you are stepping into the role of leaders and global problem-solvers. The conversations you have, the compromises you reach, and the ideas you develop reflect the kind of world you want to help build. I encourage you to participate fully, challenge yourselves, and embrace the opportunity to grow.
To our advisors, thank you for investing in your students and empowering them to engage at this level. The lasting impact you make on them often extends far beyond a single conference or club — just as my own advisors and mentors shaped my confidence, leadership, and belief in what I was capable of. Your guidance does not end when the gavel falls; it continues in the classrooms they enter, the careers they pursue, and the communities they go on to serve.
To my fellow Secretariat and the entire DeMUN staff, thank you for the countless hours, late nights, and steady commitment that make this conference possible. From drafting background guides and leading staff trainings to coordinating logistics and supporting our delegates, so much of your work happens behind the scenes, yet it forms the foundation of everything that takes place in these rooms. Your professionalism, teamwork, and belief in our shared vision are what transform this conference from a simple idea into a meaningful experience that leaves a lasting impact. I am truly grateful to lead alongside each of you.
It is an honor to host you at DePaul. I am confident that you will leave not only with resolutions drafted, but with greater confidence, perspective, and purpose.
Best,
Mohammad Atiya
