In 2027, this conference aims to inspire the next generation of global leaders by offering a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment where ideas transform into impactful action.

Letter From The Secretary General

Dear Delegates, Advisors, and DeMUN Staff,

Welcome to DeMUN III at DePaul University.

For more than seven years, Model United Nations has been one of the most formative parts of my life. What began as an activity I joined as a high school student ultimately helped me discover my passion for political science, law, public service, and civic engagement. It gave me the confidence to speak in rooms where I once may have remained silent, taught me how to lead others, and opened doors and opportunities that I could never have imagined when I attended my first conference.

That is why I believe Model UN matters now more than ever.

We come together at a time when the principles we debate in committee rooms — peace, human rights, international law, sovereignty, humanitarian responsibility, and the protection of civilians — are not abstract concepts. They have consequences for real people. Across the world, communities continue to experience war, displacement, hunger, and profound loss. For me, the suffering and devastation we have witnessed in Gaza is a painful reminder that the questions debated within the United Nations are ultimately questions about human lives.

Model UN cannot recreate the weight of those realities, nor should we pretend that it can. But it can challenge us to pay attention to them. It asks us to look beyond headlines, understand perspectives beyond our own, confront difficult questions, and recognize the responsibility that comes with leadership.

The greatest value of Model UN is not simply learning parliamentary procedure or writing a resolution. It is the character it builds. You learn how to walk into a room of strangers and find common ground. You learn to defend an idea while remaining willing to listen. You learn that leadership requires preparation, humility, resilience, empathy, and sometimes the courage to speak when remaining silent would be easier.

Those lessons extend far beyond this conference. Students who do Model UN go on to become lawyers, educators, physicians, public servants, organizers, business leaders, diplomats, and leaders within their own communities. Regardless of where your path takes you, the ability to understand the world around you and communicate across differences will remain invaluable.

Our Secretariat and staff have been working since the summer to make DeMUN III an exceptional experience. Months of preparation have gone into researching committees, writing background guides, training chairs, planning logistics, and creating an environment in which every delegate has the opportunity to challenge themselves and grow. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has dedicated their time and energy to bringing this conference to life.

To our advisors, thank you for continuing to invest in your students. I know personally how much an advisor’s encouragement can shape a student’s confidence and future. The opportunities you create for your delegates may influence them long after they graduate.

And to our delegates: take advantage of this day. Raise your placard even when you are nervous. Introduce yourself to someone you do not know. Defend your position thoughtfully, but allow yourself to be challenged. Take risks. Make mistakes. Learn from them.

Seven years ago, I could not have known where Model United Nations would take me. Some of you sitting in these committee rooms today may someday discover your own calling because someone gave you the opportunity to speak, lead, negotiate, and believe that your voice belonged in the room.
